Thank a Veteran on Memorial Day!
Thanking a Veteran
It is easy to forget about all the sacrifices that veterans make. Throughout their service, they miss countless family birthdays, holidays, and graduations. With all that they give up for their time in the military, it may seem like there is no way to thank them. However, even the smallest gesture can be enough to show them that you appreciate their service. Keep these ideas in mind so that you can help a veteran, while also helping yourself with a tax break.
- Hire a vet – if you own a business, consider hiring a veteran when they return to civilian life. Not only will it provide them with a steady income and help them merge back into life at home, but you may also be able to qualify for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which could be as much as $9,600 for each qualified veteran that you hire.
- Send a care package – putting together a care package can be a fun activity that you do with your friends and family, and can help to put a smile on the face of an active duty service member. There are also many organizations that will put the packages together for you for a donation. Any donation that you make can qualify as a tax write off for the year.
- Donate your car – if you have an old car that has been taking up room on your driveway, donate it to a veteran. You can also donate an old RV that you have. You will be able to deduct the sale price of your vehicle and the donation price on your taxes.
- Run – there are many charitable runs and walks that help raise money for veterans and their families. While doing something good for someone else, you will also be helping yourself by exercising.
All of us at Club Agency in Garden City, New York would like to thank all of the service men and women out there, both retired and in active duty.
