Why You Need to Update Your Home Inventory Why You Need to Update Your Home Inventory

This January, make a point to update your home inventory.

Now that the holidays have come to an end, it's time to look over your home inventory and add the gifts that you received.  By adding your new possessions to your inventory, you can assess whether your homeowners insurance will offer enough coverage to protect the gifts that you received for the holidays.  If you received gifts that fall into the following categories, then make sure that you add them to your inventory today.
  • Electronics
Your home insurance policy likely offers set coverage limits for different categories of items.  Because electronics are worth so much money, the value of your smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, game consoles, televisions, and so on can add up very quickly.  If you have received new electronics this holiday season, then you may not have enough coverage for them under your current home insurance policy.  To secure protection for your new devices, you should adjust your coverage limits or consider securing a supplemental personal property policy.
  • Jewelry
Most home insurance policies have strict coverage limits for jewelry, and appraisals are often required to receive coverage.  As such, when you are updating your home inventory, you should make sure to take any new jewelry to an appraiser to get an official report of the piece's value.  You can then submit the appraiser's report to your insurance provider, so the new jewelry is covered under your home insurance policy.  Failing to take this step could leave you unprotected if your new jewelry is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Sports Equipment
If you have received new sports equipment, such as snowboards, skis, or a bicycle, then it's essential that you add these items to your inventory and then review your home insurance policy.  This is because most standard policies place coverage limits on your sporting equipment.  Oftentimes, one high-end mountain or road bike is enough to exceed your coverage limit on its own.  Once you have added up the value of all your new sporting equipment, speak to your home insurance provider to see if you can adjust your coverage limits or secure some other form of supplemental personal property coverage. This is why it's so important to update your home inventory after the holidays.  Do you have additional questions about your home inventory or homeowners insurance coverage?  If so, then contact the experts at Club Agency Insurance Brokerage in Garden City, New York.  We are ready to assist you with all your coverage needs today.
