The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina
This year marks the 10 year anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit the United States - Hurricane Katrina. The celebration of the progress that has been made in the area included brass bands and dancers who occupied the same streets that were buried by water years before.
Local and national leaders mingled with clergy members in the Lower 9
th Ward, laying flowers next to a granite plaque that was erected to commemorate the lives that were lost during the flood that hit the area on August 29, 2005.
The celebration in the Lower 9
th Ward were the end of a week-long event that included speeches by past and present presidents, panel discussions, and concerts. President Obama and former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton all visited the area to help celebrate the rebirth of the city.
The breach of the levees and following floods that occurred in 2005 submerged 80 percent of the city. Katrina was responsible for over 1,800 deaths in the area with the majority of them happening in New Orleans. While most of the city has already been rebuilt, some areas, including the Lower 9
th Ward, are still struggling to return to normal. Less than half of the 14,000 residents who occupied the Lower 9
th Ward before Katrina have returned to the area.
