What You Need to Know About SPF Ratings What You Need to Know About SPF Ratings
tube of sunscreen with a painted sun cream Sunscreen Tips Putting on sunscreen before you go outside is the best way to protect your skin from dangerous and painful sunburns. When you are shopping for sunscreen, you may be confused about which SPF rating you should choose. While a 100+ rating may seem like it will provide more protection than an SPF 30, is it really true? The SPF rating of sunscreen dictates the ability of the sunscreen to block out ultraviolet (UVB) rays, which are what will cause sunburns. However, it does not dictate how well the sunscreen is able to block out UVA rays, which can cause deeper skin damage. Both UVB and UVA rays are known to increase the risk of skin cancer. The SPF rating is the amount of time that it would take for you to get sunburned if you were not wearing sunscreen, as opposed to how long it would take while you are wearing sunscreen. While you may think that sunscreens that have a higher SPF will better protect your skin, anything over an SPF of 45 is just nonsense. There is no sunscreen that is able to provide 100 percent protection, but 45 SPF is able to block out 98 percent of rays. No matter which sunscreen you choose, make sure that you choose one that is water resistance and apply it liberally at least 30 minutes before you head outside to get all the benefits. If you are sweating, swimming, or drying off, make sure that you reapply your sunscreen at least every two hours. Having the right health insurance can help to make sure that you are protected from any damage from the sun this summer.
