Open Enrollment Deadline
Open enrollment is almost over, which means it is the perfect time to sign up for a health insurance policy. The deadline for open enrollment is February 15
th, and if you do not sign up for coverage during this period, you will be left without protection and have to face much heavier fines then in the past.
Anyone who does not already have health insurance coverage and does not qualify for an exemption needs to sign up for health insurance during open enrollment to avoid having to pay the penalty. If you already have health insurance coverage through your employer, you do not have to worry about signing up.
If you choose not to sign up for health insurance during open enrollment, you will have to pay $325 per adult and 162.50 per child in your household or 2 percent of your yearly household income, whichever amount is more. You will also be left without coverage for the entire year. The penalty for not having health insurance will be paid through your 2015 federal income tax, which is most commonly filed in early 2016.
The only way that you can sign up for coverage outside of the open enrollment period is if you have a qualifying life event. Some of the most common qualifying life events include:
- Getting divorced or married.
- Having a baby, adopting a child, or putting a child up for adoption.
- Moving to a different state that does not offer the same health insurance plan that you are currently enrolled in.
- Losing your health insurance coverage do to the loss of a job.
