Do Swimming Pools Affect Your Home Insurance? Do Swimming Pools Affect Your Home Insurance?

Find out how building a pool influences your homeowners coverage.

While you might love the idea of having a personal swimming pool in your yard, there are some things to consider before undertaking this major project.  One of the things to think about is how a pool will affect your home insurance coverage and cost.  Here's what you need to know about swimming pools and your homeowners policy.
  • Increased Risk
Much like trampolines and fire pits, swimming pools increase the chances of injuries taking place on your property.  Please keep in mind that you will be responsible for all pool-related accidents on your property, regardless of the injured party had your permission to use your pool or not.  In addition to these increased liability risks, pools are also susceptible to damage which require expensive repairs.  This means that your home insurance rates will likely increase to account for expensive repairs costs.
  • Home Insurance and Pool Liability
The personal liability portion of your home insurance policy offers coverage for the pool-related injuries that third-parties might sustain.  For instance, if a guest hurts themselves while using your pool, your homeowners insurance would offer coverage for their medical treatment and for your legal defense should the injured party decide to sue.  However, your existing homeowners policy might not offer enough liability coverage to address your increased risk after installing a pool.  In this case, you might have to raise your coverage limits or secure additional liability coverage to supplement your policy.  Both of these options come at a cost. Please keep in mind that you and your family will not be protected under your liability coverage.  If you or a loved one are injured or accidentally drown in a pool-related accident, then you would need to file a claim with your health or life insurance to receive coverage. This is what you should know about swimming pools and your homeowners insurance.  Do you have additional questions regarding your home coverage?  If so, then contact the experts at Club Agency Insurance Brokerage in Garden City, New York.  Our dedicated team is eager to assist you with all your coverage needs today.
