How to De-Ice Your Sidewalk How to De-Ice Your Sidewalk

Prevent any nasty falls this winter by learning how to de-ice your sidewalk.

Winter is here and, for many people living in colder climates, this means dealing with snow and ice.  As you prepare your home for holiday guests, it's important that they arrive at your front door safely.  Reduce the risk of slipping and falling this winter by learning how to best de-ice your walkways.
  • One of the most popular de-icers is rock salt. It's both affordable and effective, melting ice and snow on contact.  However, be careful when using rock salt.  It can corrode concrete and can be dangerous for pets and plants.
  • Other popular alternatives to rock salt include calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. These chemicals come in both liquid and crystal form and can be applied to your walkways before and after a storm to prevent ice from forming.  Keep in mind that these de-icers are more expensive than salt, and can damage carpets and floors if tracked inside.
  • Another way to effectively de-ice your sidewalks is by shoveling and scraping the ice off. If using this method, do your best to address the ice immediately.  If snow falls, then it can get packed into the ice, which makes the removal process more difficult.
  • If you don't have the time to properly de-ice your walkways, then spread cat litter or sand on slippery surfaces. This will provide a bit of traction on icy walkways and can help you and your visitors from sliding around.
Try out these strategies to effectively de-ice your sidewalks.  Remember, another way to keep all your holiday guests safe this year is by having the proper insurance coverage for your home and loved ones.  To find the best policies to fit your needs, contact the professionals at Club Agency Insurance Brokerage in Garden City, New York.  Our dedicated team is always ready to assist you with all your insurance needs.
